John Spacey - DJ and MD of BeGoodMusic John is originally from Edinburgh and now based in London. Growing up in a musical family, he was classically trained on piano and cello but started listening to dance music and taught himself to DJ whilst at University in the 90s. His Student’s Union venue wasn’t renowned for its credible music nights so he set about doing his bit to change that and, in 1996, started his own Saturday house night. “If the girls were dancing on the tables, it was going well” he laughs.. “I knew we’d delivered if people were asking for mix tapes at the DJ box and all the posters outside had disappeared by the end of the night, to end up decorating bedroom walls” Under the name John Spacey, he’s since played to over a million people in seven countries, including some incredible venues. In America, he’s played Pacha in Manhattan’s upper West side, Le Souk in New York’s East Village, Philadelphia, Toronto and the Miami WMC. In Europe, he’s held a residency in Belgium, played private parties in St Tropez and headlined at the anniversary of the Louise Gallery Brussels. In Ibiza, he’s performed to crowds at Cream on the Terrace at Amnesia, the famous water parties Fiesta Del Agua at Es Paradis, Bar Manumission, Bar Mambo, Soul Heaven at Savannah, and sunset at the legendary Cafe Del Mar to name a few. He’s played opening sets for a host of well known club Djs... Danny Rampling, Roger Sanchez, Pete Tong, Darren Emerson, Harry Choo Choo Romero, Junior Jack and Judge Jules amongst others. John started the club brand BeGoodMusic in 2004 with his DJ partner Ryan and built up a presence in London by hosting a formidable portfolio of residencies across the capital - from Clapham’s White House to the style bars of Notting Hill and Soho. BeGood has appeared at almost all of London’s major clubs over the last few years, collaborating with Space at The Cross, Dusted at Canvas, Pacha London, Boujis and Plan B. John has appeared many times at the mighty Ministry of Sound, hosting rooms for Erick Morillo’s Subliminal Sessions, Roger Sanchez’s Release Yourself, Defected in the House with Kenny Dope, Saturday Sessions and Toolroom Knights. During the Winter of 2007 and 2008, he played a 24 date tour of French Alpine ski resorts taking in residencies and a NYE show in Val D’Isere, Chamonix, Meribel and monthly gigs at the highest club in Europe in the mountain village of Val Thorens. BeGood has hosted events at the Altitude Festival in Meribel featuring pool parties with Norman Jay MBE, club nights with Joey Negro, Brandon Block, The Dub Pistols and KT Tunstall’s concert after party. Back in the UK, John pioneered the Boat cruise to super-club event format in 2005, now a regular feature in today’s club listings. BeGood went on to have eight sell out BeGood on the Thames London Boat Parties, taking thousands of music fans up and down the river. His flagship parties were featured on Ministry of Sound TV, awarded Critics Choice in London Evening Standard and ranked a number one recommended event in Time Out. He now runs his own media agency and continues to play celebrity parties and special events across a wide range of genres. He’s entertained personalities from Cheryl Cole to Madonna at venues from Kensington Roof Gardens and the top of the Gherkin to private penthouse events. In Oct 2011, he performed for Grammy Award winner Imogen Heap at the world premiere of her latest work.

With the fifth birthday of BeGood at Ministry of Sound alongside Erick Morillo in March 2009, hosting Ministry with Roger Sanchez at Release Yourself in Aug 2009, eight sell out BeGood on the Thames London Boat parties, a 24 date of the French Alps including the highest club in Europe and North American tour dates including playing the hottest club in the New York's East village, the quest to inform, educate and entertain continues.
Back in Summer 2007, John was interviewed on Ministry of Sound TV, and appeared alongside headlining names such as Joey Negro, Mark Knight, Steve Angello, Kenny Dope, Osunlade and Simon Dunmore at Ministry of Sound when BeGoodMusic hosted their own room at the legendary venue.
2006 had seen BeGood being appointed Saturday residents at London's Centro alongside Hed Kandi's Sundays, repeat appearances at the then legendary AKA, performing at Pacha Manhattan in New York, Glitterati in Brighton, taking BeGood in Ibiza to Cafe Mambo, Es Paradis, Cafe Mambo, and the Pukka Up Ibiza Boat Party.
The portfolio of residencies has included John's bi-monthy Saturday residency with BeGoodMusic at The White House in Clapham, one of London's most respected house venues continued for no fewer than three years - whilst each week in 2006, BeGood featured at Dusk in Battersea, London's bar of the moment on World's Best Bars.com.
John's 2004 residency in Belgium included a headline set at Deluxe at Barocco in Liège Belgium and at Luxus. www.deluxe.bluepage.us and www.clubbarocco.be
Notable guest appearances in the latter half of 2004 included Taste in Edinburgh during the International Festival and at Boujis in South Kensington playing the headline set from midnight until 3am in an Ibiza meets London soundclash. www.boujis.com John has also been diversifying with genres at Eclipse Notting Hill and in October 2004 presented a private party mixing no less than five hours of Arabic music.

Lastly, here are some shrewd words from Simon Dunmore: Strange times are these on today’s dancefloors. Saturday used to be a celebration of the week gone by, hands would be raised and songs would be sung. Not now! Some DJ's have become too serious about themselves... they have forgotten their responsibility to the dance floor... it is not about playing exclusives, the records on your own label or even your own productions... it is about making that dance floor jump!!! There is of course a balance. While new records need to be exposed there is also great value in playing those tracks recognisable to the dancefloor. We hope we achieve this at Defected, we take our house music seriously whilst we do not take ourselves too seriously... Defected In The House is all about having a great Saturday night out!!!
This too, is what John Spacey is all about. John is one of a breed of DJs for whom the music is deep in his soul. Technical proficiency came from a natural understanding of music theory and practice from an early age. He embraces and understands technology but need not rely upon it to put together a five deck mix, programmed to harmonic perfection that can effortlessly blow people away.
And the music? Well that speaks for itself.
